For day care home providers, since meal counts must be documented by the end of the day, at minimum, meal count records should be available for all approved meals served through the day prior to the review.

EXAMPLE

Let’s take a look at this example: Meal counts have been recorded prior to the meal service.

Why is this a red flag?

Meal counts cannot be recorded prior to being served.

Child and Adult care centers are required to record meals served at the time of service. At-risk Afterschool care centers, outside school hours care centers, and emergency shelters are not required to record time of service meal counts. Instead they are required to maintain records of the number of meals prepared, the number of meals served, and the number of participants in attendance for each meals service.

Day care home providers must record meals served by the end of the day.
